Your First Orthodontic Appointment

Your First Orthodontic Appointment:

We look forward to meeting you at your first visit to our office.  During your evaluation/consultation, we will get acquainted and you will learn more about the treatment we offer. We understand that each patient’s orthodontic treatment is different, and we promise to give you the personal attention you deserve.  In fact, you should plan to spend at least an hour and a half with us the first time.

First you will meet with Sharon, our clinic coordinator, who will take the necessary x-rays and photos that Dr. Lauson will use in his evaluation.  Then Ann, our new patient coordinator, will review information from you to make sure everything is ready for Dr. Lauson’s evaluation. It’s now time for the evaluation.

Let's See How We Can Help

Dr. Lauson will evaluate the records and images and perform a thorough examination including even areas beyond the mouth, as teeth and jaw positions can affect the health of the entire body.  Before the clinical evaluation, questions may be asked, such as whether the jaws make noise when the mouth is opening or closing, or if there are any problems chewing or swallowing. Sleep issues may also be explored.  Besides evaluating the teeth and jaws, other associated structures will be evaluated to make sure they are operating in a healthy fashion.  These include the jaw joints (TMJs), the nasal airway, the tonsils, and even head posture.  These are all areas that can be affected by the teeth and jaws.    This information will allow us to make a proper diagnosis and finalize our treatment plan at the first visit. This more comprehensive treatment approach is also known as Integrative Orthodontics or Functional Orthodontics.

Discussing Our Findings and Your Treatment Options

Following the exam, we will go over all of our related findings and discuss treatment options so that you will be fully apprised of the situation.  We will also discuss the type of treatment appliances to be used. This is the best time to ask questions about the process. You will probably notice how comprehensive Dr. Lauson’s evaluation and treatment recommendations are.  You will understand the significant connection of the teeth to the other facial structures and even the rest of the body.  How orthodontic treatment is performed today can affect the future health of the patient, and if not done with the whole-body awareness, problems such as TMJ Dysfunction, Sleep Apnea or even neck or back problems can be the result.  You will now know why Dr. Lauson may recommend a more comprehensive treatment approach, not typically found in other orthodontic offices. We will also discuss the type of treatment appliances to be used. This is a very good time to ask questions about the process. Finally, Ann will go over our fees and payment options.

By the end of your evaluation, you'll have a much better understanding of how the teeth and jaw structures can be maximally improved and how we can help you get there. Working together, we can achieve a true partnership with one goal – helping you achieve a beautiful, confident smile!  Call us for a consultation today!
