Your First Appointment for TMD and OSA

First Appointment for treatment of TMJ Dysfunction (TMD) or Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA):

We look forward to getting acquainted with you and finding out the specifics about what your concerns are. Our office takes a very comprehensive approach to treating these complex disorders. For that reason, we have the most sophisticated diagnostic instrumentation available, which include the i-CAT 3D Imaging System, the K-7 Computerized Mandibular tracking and the Itero Intraoral Scanner. Our treatment approach may be quite different from what you have previously experienced, however, having successfully treated many thousands of patients, our results are highly predictable. It all starts with a very comprehensive initial evaluation/consultation.

You should plan to spend an hour and a half with us. That's to ensure that no one has to rush, and that you get plenty of time to ask any questions you may have. First you will meet with Sharon, our clinic coordinator, who will take necessary x-rays and photos that Dr. Lauson will use in his evaluation. During this time, you will be asked to fill out a Symptoms Rating Sheet (SRS) which includes over 60 different symptoms you rate that are associated with TMD and OSA. You might be surprised at some of the symptoms listed. An Epworth Sleep Screening questioner is also completed. Then Ann, our new patient coordinator, will review information from you to make sure everything is ready for Dr. Lauson’s evaluation.

Let's See How We Can Help

Dr. Lauson will evaluate the patient’s medical and dental history, the SRS and Epworth Sleep Screening, the photos and x-ray images. Before the clinical evaluation, questions may be asked that are related to the Symptoms Ratings. Besides evaluating the teeth and jaws, other associated structures will be evaluated to make sure they are operating in a healthy fashion. These include the jaw joints (TMJs), the nasal airway, the tonsils, and even head posture. Muscles of the head and neck will be evaluated. All this information will allow us to have a complete picture of your condition, in order to make a proper diagnosis and finalize our treatment plan at the first visit, always recognizing that your time and ours are both very valuable. This approach, which is more comprehensive than the traditional orthodontic treatment is also known as Integrative Orthodontics or Functional Orthodontics.

Discussing Our Findings and Your Treatment Options

Following the exam, we will go over all of our related findings and discuss treatment options so that you will be fully apprised of the situation. We will also discuss the type of treatment appliances to be used and the time required for each. This will be the best time to ask questions about the process.

You will probably notice how comprehensive Dr. Lauson’s evaluation and treatment recommendations are and how one area of treatment can affect multiple areas of concerns. You will understand the significant connection of the teeth and jaws to the other facial structures and even to the rest of the body. You will now know why Dr. Lauson may recommend a more comprehensive treatment approach, not typically found in other offices.

Our Treatment Fees and Philosophy

Now that we have a treatment plan, we will also explain what our fees will be, and what payment options are available. Our fees are based on the principle of paying a fair fee for great value. If we cannot offer a great and highly predictable result in your case, then we will not provide treatment and we can part as friends. Much of what we do, we have successfully completed for thousands of patients over more than three decades of time. You will have the benefit of this experience. By the time you are ready to leave our office, we think you'll have a much better understanding of how the teeth and jaw structures can be maximally improved and how we can help you get there. So why not take the first step now — call us for a consultation at 303.690.0100!

Our patient says:
“Now, after treatment, I no longer have symptoms. I really got lucky that in my second time in treatment I ended up here. It would be nice if every orthodontic office knew how to do this treatment, because there’d be so many more happy people out there. I really didn’t want to believe that everything Dr. Lauson was saying would come true. It sounded too good to be true, but the truth is, it was true. He really knows what he’s doing!”
